A mentoring relationship is a reciprocal and collaborative learning relationship between 2 or more individuals with mutual goals and shared accountability for the outcomes and success of the relationship. In Episode 10 of the AONN+ Heart and Soul of Oncology Navigation podcast, Natalie Fellers, Cancer Care Liaison at Northside Hospital, and Patricia Johnson, BS, RN, OCN, CBCN, Oncology Care Coordinator at UVM Health Network – CVPH, discussed the importance of mentorship in the field of oncology navigation.
Natalie and Patricia are co-chairs of the AONN+ Professional Development Committee. The mission of this committee is to provide mentorship support to AONN+ members in areas of quality, process improvement, metrics, and reporting.
Here are the top 3 takeaways from the episode:
- In 2012, the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer introduced a new standard that would require navigation programs to be phased into cancer centers by 2015. As a result, many navigator positions began to fill, and those navigators were tasked with building programs based on their community’s needs. Mentorship played a huge role in the integration of navigator programs, because while the needs may be different, the goals are the same.
- Navigators who have been in their role for more than 3 years have probably run into every problem possible and could help others in the role by serving as a mentor. If you are looking for a mentor, consider the following questions: in what areas could you use help, is there someone who has the experience for your program, are you looking for site-specific navigation or improvement in a specific area?
- The AONN+ Professional Development Committee is working on developing a mentorship program that will offer AONN+ members disease-specific mentoring or professional development mentoring.
