Certification Core Curriculum Module: Psychosocial Care and Distress Screening

Target Audience This educational initiative is directed toward hematology and oncology nurse navigators, and is also recommended for patient navigators, social workers, and case managers whose focus is on cancer care and survivorship.

Educational Objectives After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Review/define distress screening and needs of the patient with cancer
  • Review American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer Standards 2015 (2014). Cancer Program Standards 2012, Version 1.2.1: Ensuring Patient-Centered Care
  • Review the process of distress screening using the Distress Thermometer and Problem Checklist
  • Discuss psychosocial distress and the patient’s perspective
  • Identify patients at increased risk for distress across the cancer continuum and periods of vulnerability
  • Identify strategies for coping and adjusting to a cancer diagnosis
  • Review supportive interventions
  • Identify psychosocial and physical effects of pain on quality of life
  • Provide appropriate and care and counsel for patients and their families
