Sharon Gentry is Editor in Chief, Journal of Oncology Navigation & Survivorship® and CONQUER: the journey informed™. She obtained her nursing bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Greensboro, respectively. In the past she has served as a program director for the AONN+ organization, guiding and directing the organization based on agreed-upon strategic plans, goals and objectives that the organization. She was active on the accredited certification for the Foundations of Learning, metrics development and acuity project. She continues to support the Local Navigation Networks actively serves on the Commission on Cancer Accreditation Committee and the Quality Improvement Committee as an AONN+ representative. Ms Gentry travels nationally, lecturing on the navigation concept and has published numerous articles and chapters on the subject. She is on the editorial board for The Oncology Nurse-APN/PA and works with the National Navigation Roundtable Workforce Development group. On the local level, she is an active member of the Piedmont Triad Local Navigation Network and Piedmont Triad Oncology Nursing Society.

The Northwest Navigator Network is the only local navigation network (LNN) on the West Coast, north of California. Given this vast geographical area, we hold our meetings in a virtual forum, meeting monthly via Zoom. This allows us to connect navigators from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska, many who live and work in rural areas. In an effort to seek out more community resources for our LNN members and patients in these communities, we designed a Virtual Community Resource Fair. We have held 2 resource fairs, each happening annually in the fall. In this article, we provide tips for hosting your own virtual fair.

The rural areas provide a distance challenge, the urban areas face missed bus connections and the suburban falls between the two. It is not surprising that 4 million patients miss appointments just because they don't have a ride each year.

At a recent conference, I heard a new term that might interest navigators: food insecurity. The US Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service defines food insecurity as “a household-level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food.”

A consistent worry or concern that is shared among navigators is the measurement of what navigators do on a daily basis. The excuse that “we are just nurses” is not acceptable. Nurses assess, plan, implement and evaluate on a daily basis so navigators can do the same. With 1,479,350 people projected to be diagnosed with cancer this year, what is the chance that the majority will come in contact with a form of patient navigation? 50%? Or if narrowed to a nurse navigator, maybe 25%? At current, there is no way to calculate that number, but with more cancer programs initiating patient navigation programs, the vision is to increase their chance.

Dottye Wodogaza, Tiffany Winslow, and Kelly Jeffcoat, breast care nurses from the Columbia area, have been the driving force behind navigation networking in South Carolina. Their goal is to use their time effectively helping nurse navigators network and learn new information. At this point, they have only opened meetings to nurse navigators focusing on breast cancer.

The Cancer Patient Navigators of Georgia was founded in 2009 in an effort to meet the needs of nurse navigators within Georgia, both educationally and for networking purposes. The formation of the group was conducted by the Georgia Society of Clinical Oncology, in partnership with the Georgia Cancer Coalition.
